Sweden’s Left Party (Vänsterpartiet) leadership is preparing to issue a statement today on the investigation into suspected election irregularities linked to the election campaign of party candidate Mohamed Abdukardir Ali in Borlänge, according to Expressen.
The move by the party leadership comes amid growing attention to the case, which prosecutors are investigating following reports of ballot papers that were allegedly pre-marked and suspicions concerning the transportation of voters during the early-voting period.
According to Expressen, the Left Party’s national leadership had not publicly commented on the allegations by Tuesday morning, but the party’s press office confirmed that a statement would be issued later in the day.
The newspaper also quoted an unnamed member of parliament as saying that the party leadership had been surprised by the developments. The remarks are attributed to Expressen’s source and do not constitute an official statement from the party leadership.
Prosecutors reopened the investigation after election day. So far, no one has been formally notified of suspicion of a crime. Mohamed Abdukardir Ali has denied allegations concerning election irregularities and told SVT that the claims were incorrect.
The case focuses on the circumstances surrounding the personal votes Ali received, which enabled him to move past his position on the party list and win a seat in parliament. The relevant authorities are continuing their investigation before determining whether any criminal offence occurred.
