Sweden election on a knife-edge: Opposition leads 175–174 as Wednesday votes could still overturn the result

Sweden’s 2026 election entered an exceptionally sensitive phase on Monday morning after SVT’s latest projection settled on 175 seats for the Social Democrats, Left Party, Green Party and Centre Party combined, compared with 174 seats for the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals in the 349-seat Riksdag.
But a one-seat lead does not mean the contest is over. The distribution of seats shifted during the night as more votes were counted. After 2 a.m., the opposition was briefly projected at 176 seats against 173 for the Tidö parties before the estimate returned to 175–174. According to SVT’s live election coverage, its statistical model at one point gave a 90% probability that the result would end at 175–174, while stressing that the figures remained preliminary.
More than 94% counted, but hundreds of districts await Wednesday
Swedish election result services showed shortly before 5 a.m. that around 94.7% of the preliminary count had been completed. But the process does not yet include every vote that will form part of the final result.
Sweden has 6,626 districts in the election results system, while results from 6,312 polling districts are reported during election night. Another 314 aggregation districts remain, including in particular votes from Swedes living abroad and early votes that arrive late. These begin to be counted on Wednesday.
In the previous election, around 224,000 votes entered Wednesday’s count, illustrating why this stage cannot be ignored in an election where only one seat separates the two camps.
Numbers shift with every new batch
According to SVT, at one point during the night 6,137 of the 6,626 districts in the results display had been counted, with the total continuing to rise. Available results also showed that the gap in vote share between the blocs remained extremely narrow, making it possible for a single seat to move from one side to the other as additional votes are included.
The Swedish Election Authority, Valmyndigheten, says the final parliamentary election result is expected to be established during the weekend following election day, after county administrative boards complete the final count that began on 14 September.
Why Wednesday’s votes matter this time
In an election with a wide margin, overseas and late-arriving votes may not alter the majority. But 2026 is different: an absolute majority begins at 175 seats, and the current projection gives one camp exactly that number.
That means the movement of just one seat could turn a 175–174 opposition lead into the opposite result or produce an even more complicated parliamentary situation. Magdalena Andersson therefore cannot claim a final victory, while Ulf Kristersson cannot treat his government as definitively defeated before the remaining stages of counting are completed.
The final result will not be known overnight
County administrative boards began the final count and rechecking of ballots on Monday, 14 September, including personal votes. That process runs alongside Wednesday’s count of late-arriving early votes and votes from abroad before the Election Authority announces the final result, expected during the weekend.
Election night therefore ended without a final political verdict: the opposition leads by a single seat, but tens of thousands of votes have yet to enter the full picture, making Wednesday a potentially decisive stage in determining which side has the shorter path to forming Sweden’s next government.
