Euro Times – US President Donald Trump says he is approaching a pivotal decision over the direction of the war with Iran as he prepares to consult Gulf leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York before deciding Washington’s next move.
Axios reported on September 17 that Trump is weighing whether to resume large-scale military operations against Iran or pursue another course. He is expected to meet on Tuesday with leaders or senior representatives from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman.
The Gulf consultations could shape the next phase of the conflict. Saudi Arabia and Qatar had raised concerns in August that a broader US military escalation could trigger Iranian retaliation against energy infrastructure in the region, according to the report.
Trump separately told reporters that he hoped the seven-month war was nearing an end, saying Iran wanted a deal and that he had heard from Tehran “directly,” without providing details. Reuters reported the remarks as the conflict continues to disrupt regional energy supplies and shipping.
Washington is meanwhile keeping forces in the Middle East prepared for the possibility of renewed combat. Axios said the administration is also developing a postwar regional strategy focused on containing Iran and wider regional arrangements.
Trump’s comments do not amount to a final decision on expanding military operations. He has indicated that consultations with Washington’s Gulf partners will form part of his deliberations over the next phase.
