Sweden election: SVT says Tidö bloc can no longer overturn opposition lead

Sweden’s 2026 election moved closer to a political conclusion on Wednesday evening as SVT’s election model said the Tidö parties no longer had a realistic path to overturn the opposition’s lead during the supplementary count.

The assessment came as the so-called Wednesday votes — late-arriving advance ballots and votes from abroad — were being added to the preliminary result. The parliamentary balance had narrowed to a single seat during the count, underlining how close the election remained.

SVT’s assessment is a projection based on the votes counted so far, not Sweden’s formally established final election result. The final count is carried out by the county administrative boards before the Swedish Election Authority formally establishes the result.

A one-seat contest

The opposition — the Social Democrats, Left Party, Green Party and Centre Party — had been leading the Tidö parties, comprising the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals. Seats moved between the two sides as Wednesday’s votes were counted, at one point leaving the blocs separated by just one mandate.

The latest development is significant because SVT had earlier described a Tidö comeback as increasingly unlikely. Its updated assessment went further, saying the bloc’s remaining path to an electoral majority had effectively disappeared.

Government formation comes next

Even when the seat distribution is confirmed, the election result does not by itself determine Sweden’s next government. Party leaders will still have to navigate negotiations in a fragmented Riksdag, where the opposition parties differ on the composition and policy basis of a possible new government.

The official result therefore remains the decisive reference point. Until it is formally established, the figures and seat allocation should be treated as preliminary.
