Two men held in Finnish Lapland espionage investigation are residents of Sweden
New details have emerged about two men detained by Finnish authorities in Lapland as part of an espionage investigation, showing that both are residents of Sweden and adding a cross-border dimension to the security case.
According to a report by Yle published on Wednesday, 16 September, neither man has a known residential address in Finland, while available records indicate that both have a home address in a small coastal town in Sweden.
Yle also reported that one of the men appears in the Pandora Papers as the beneficial owner of a company registered in the British Virgin Islands. Ownership of an offshore company does not in itself imply wrongdoing or criminal conduct.
The case remains at the investigation and suspicion stage, and neither man has been convicted. The case has drawn particular attention because it concerns Lapland, a strategically important northern region bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia and an area that has attracted growing security interest in recent years.
