WSJ: US Briefs Gulf States on Possible Short, Intense Iran Campaign After Midterms

The US has briefed Gulf states on the possibility of a short, intense military campaign against Iran after the November midterms, the Wall Street Journal reports. No final strike decision has been announced.

Euro Times – Washington

The United States has informed several Gulf Arab states that they should prepare for the possibility of a short but intense new military campaign against Iran after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the discussions.

The communication is significant because Washington is briefing regional partners about a possible escalation, rather than threatening those countries themselves. The reported preparations do not establish that President Donald Trump has made a final decision to launch new strikes.

Gulf partners briefed on a possible new campaign

According to the newspaper, U.S. officials have conveyed the prospect of renewed military operations through diplomatic and military channels. The scenario under discussion involves a concentrated campaign that could follow the congressional elections, as Washington weighs ways to pressure Tehran over its nuclear and military capabilities.

For Gulf governments, the prospect raises questions about the security of military installations, energy infrastructure and commercial shipping. Any new round of U.S.-Iranian fighting could expose neighboring states to retaliation or wider disruption, even if they were not participants in the initial strikes.

U.S. military preparations and force protection

The reported planning comes alongside measures to strengthen U.S. defenses and reposition personnel in the region. Anadolu Agency, summarizing the Journal’s reporting, described preparations involving Patriot air defenses, the movement of personnel away from vulnerable facilities and efforts to replenish military supplies.

Additional naval assets and other forces have also been discussed as part of a broader effort to increase operational readiness. Such deployments can serve several purposes, including deterrence, protection of U.S. forces and preparations for possible strikes. They are not, by themselves, confirmation of an order to attack.

What could a renewed operation target?

The military options reportedly under consideration include Iranian missile and drone capabilities, facilities connected to the nuclear program and other strategic infrastructure. Advocates of a concentrated operation appear to believe that a limited period of intense pressure could change Tehran’s calculations.

But the assumption that a campaign would remain short is inherently uncertain. Iran would retain choices about the timing, scale and geography of any response, and escalation could affect maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the wider Gulf economy.

No final decision announced by Trump

The White House has not publicly announced a decision to renew military operations. Trump has kept military and diplomatic options open, while the timing of any possible action remains speculative.

The distinction matters: reports that officials are discussing a post-election scenario are not equivalent to confirmation that a strike has been authorized or scheduled. Nor do they establish that diplomacy has been abandoned.

Diplomacy and deterrence proceed in parallel

Regional mediation efforts and discussions about Iran’s nuclear program continue against a backdrop of heightened military readiness. For Washington, demonstrating that force remains an option may be intended to strengthen its negotiating position. For Tehran, the challenge is to assess whether the preparations represent coercive diplomacy or the prelude to renewed attacks.

For Gulf states, the immediate concern is preparing for the consequences of either outcome. The central finding of the Wall Street Journal report is that the United States has communicated the possibility of a renewed, intensive campaign—not that a new war has already been ordered.
