Israeli fighter jets reportedly flew towards Iran during overnight drill over Syria and Iraq

Fox News reports an Israeli air drill towards Iran over Syria and Iraq, as Syrian monitors confirm aircraft activity but not the mission's purpose.
Israeli fighter jets reportedly flew towards Iran overnight during a military exercise that took them over Syria and Iraq, according to a report aired by Fox News on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. The network did not identify its sources or provide details about the aircraft involved.
Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst said Israeli forces had conducted overnight drills, sending fighter jets towards Iran via Syrian and Iraqi airspace. The report does not establish that the aircraft entered Iranian airspace or that any strike took place.
Syrian monitoring group reports unusual air activity
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights separately reported heavy Israeli fighter-jet activity across parts of Syria early on Tuesday. Its observers said a squadron headed towards Iraq before later returning over Syria. The group said it could not confirm the number of aircraft, their departure point or the purpose of the flights.
These observations are consistent with reports of regional air activity, but do not independently verify Fox News’s description of the mission as an exercise directed towards Iran.
Unverified claims near the Iraq–Iran border
Social media accounts also circulated claims that fighter jets had been heard near the Iraq–Iran border. Those accounts could not reliably identify the aircraft. There has been no publicly verified evidence in these reports of Israeli jets crossing into Iranian airspace or conducting attacks.
Reports follow US defence chief’s visit to Israel
The reports emerged shortly after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday, 19 October. According to Reuters, Hegseth met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Uvda air base in the Negev. An Israeli spokesperson said the discussions covered regional threats and the US–Israel partnership in addressing them both defensively and offensively.
Neither the United States nor Israel publicly linked that meeting to the reported flights. Any suggestion that the exercise was a rehearsal for an imminent strike remains speculative.
What can be concluded?
The available reporting points to heightened military activity in a region already affected by tensions over Iran. Yet crucial details remain unconfirmed: the number and type of jets, the precise flight path, the exercise’s objectives and whether the operation was officially authorised or acknowledged by the relevant governments.
In short, a reported flight towards Iran is not evidence of an attack on Iran. Further official statements or independently verifiable information would be needed to establish the purpose of the operation.
