Only 28,600 votes separate Sweden’s blocs as Wednesday count could decide election

Sweden’s 2026 election entered an exceptionally sensitive phase on Monday morning, with the centre-left opposition holding the narrowest of advantages and the remaining votes still capable of changing the parliamentary balance.

The latest count leaves only about 28,600 votes separating the two blocs. The race is therefore still open ahead of Wednesday’s count of late advance votes and remaining votes from Swedes abroad.

During election night, the projected distribution of seats shifted several times as new batches of votes were reported. The opposition was at one point projected to win 176 seats against 173 for the Tidö parties, before the margin narrowed again. SVT’s election coverage has repeatedly stressed that the figures remain preliminary.

Wednesday’s votes could matter

The election-night count does not include every vote that will form part of the final result. Late advance votes and remaining votes cast abroad are handled in the Wednesday count, making that stage particularly important in an election this close.

In the previous election, hundreds of thousands of votes were included at this later stage. With only tens of thousands of votes now separating the blocs, even relatively small shifts could affect the allocation of a parliamentary seat.

A single seat can change the political picture

Sweden’s Riksdag has 349 seats and 175 constitutes an absolute majority. When the blocs are separated by only one or a few seats, the final allocation can have direct consequences for the coming government negotiations.

The Swedish Election Authority says the county administrative boards began the final count on 14 September. The final Riksdag result is expected during the weekend following election day.

The result is not final yet

The close margin means neither side can treat the parliamentary balance as definitively settled. Wednesday’s count and the subsequent final verification by the county administrative boards remain crucial before Sweden has a confirmed election result.

Attention is therefore shifting from election night to the remaining votes: with just 28,600 votes separating the blocs, Wednesday could become the decisive stage in determining which side enters the government-formation process from the stronger position.
