Trump reveals US-Iran contacts held today: We are moving toward a settlement as Tehran puts Hormuz on the table
Trump says Washington and Tehran spoke on Tuesday and expects an eventual settlement, as Iran offers to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days under specific conditions.

US President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran had been in contact on Tuesday and that he believes the two countries will eventually reach a settlement, in the latest sign of a diplomatic push as Tehran places the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz among the issues tied to de-escalation.
Trump said after meeting the British prime minister on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that Iran wanted to talk and had been communicating with Washington that day. He added that the relationship was developing, according to Reuters.
Trump also reiterated that Washington would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, saying Tehran understood that position.
Hormuz enters the settlement equation
At the same time, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eased military pressure and lifted its blockade on Iranian ports.
The official said Iran wanted a clear US declaration that Washington intended to resolve the crisis diplomatically, followed by an agreed timetable. Iran’s delegation in New York, the official said, has full authority to revive diplomacy with the United States.
Iranian proposal delivered through mediators
The official said Tehran submitted a proposal to end hostilities through mediators on September 16 and that details of a possible agreement could be discussed in New York via intermediaries.
Neither Trump’s comments nor the Iranian proposal amount to an agreement. The Iranian official also said President Masoud Pezeshkian did not plan to meet Trump at UN headquarters.
But the combination of Trump’s confirmation of same-day US-Iran contacts and Tehran’s conditional Hormuz offer moves the crisis into a new phase in which the future of the strait is becoming a direct part of the political and security bargaining between Washington and Tehran.
