Sweden begins counting final late ballots as nearly 300,000 votes remain in play

Swedish municipal election committees began counting late-arriving advance and overseas ballots on Wednesday, a stage that could still alter the preliminary result of the 2026 parliamentary election.
The Swedish Election Authority says the Wednesday count covers ballots that did not reach polling stations in time on election day, including advance votes cast in other municipalities and late-arriving votes from abroad.
The authority estimates that close to 300,000 ballots may be included in this stage, substantially more than in previous elections. Because of the volume, an updated preliminary result for the Riksdag may not be complete until Thursday.
According to Omni, attention is focused on whether the remaining ballots could change the balance between the blocs. The results remain subject to updates and corrections until the counting process is completed and the final result is formally established.
Once municipal election committees complete the supplementary preliminary count, the ballots are handed to the county administrative boards as part of the final count.
